London Centennial Wheelers: 50+ Years of Pedalling Passion, Progress, and Community
In 1967, as Canada marked its centennial year, a group of Londoners decided it was time to bring organized cycling to their community. Inspired by a local race near the former Treasure Island Gardens, the London Centennial Wheelers (LCW) was born — and with it, a legacy of racing, riding, and welcoming cyclists from all walks of life.
From a humble 25-mile time trail along Highway 74 to the iconic Springbank Road Race, LCW quickly became a driving force in Ontario’s cycling scene. Founding members including John Craig and John Vanderhoeven, set the tone early: cycling should be accessible, competitive, and community-driven. And LCW never looked back.
What truly sets LCW apart is its balance of performance and inclusivity. Yes, this is a club where provincial and national champions have trained and competed — but it’s also a club where new riders find confidence, support, and their cycling community. Whether your passion lies in road racing, time trials, mountain biking, or weekend touring rides, LCW welcomes you with open arms and an open road.
A true champion of equity in sport, LCW made history when the Springbank Road Race became the first in Ontario to offer equal prize money for women, setting a powerful precedent for others to follow. This spirit of fairness and progress continues today in every aspect of club culture — from leadership to group rides.
Joining LCW means becoming part of a club that is:
- Historic, with deep roots in Canadian cycling culture
- Supportive, offering regular group rides, training opportunities, and mentorship
- Passionate, where everyone from first-timers to seasoned racers is inspired to grow
- Inclusive, creating space for every rider to belong, improve, and be heard
So, why join LCW? Because you’re not just signing up for a ride — you’re becoming part of a tradition. One where camaraderie and athletic growth go hand in hand, and where every cyclist, no matter their goal, is part of something bigger.
New to clubs? LCW encourages you to ask questions, show up to a ride, and introduce yourself. The club’s strength lies in its members — riders who have climbed hills, chased finish lines, and now gladly lend a wheel to help someone else get there, too.
Whether you’re looking for a welcoming group to ride with, a way to challenge yourself, or a space to rediscover the joy of cycling, London Centennial Wheelers is ready for you.
