A TRAGIC incident occurred in Old Mutare in Penhalonga yesterday when a four-year-old boy drowned in a disused sewage plant.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Takudzwa Mugwede.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the little boy had left his home around 9am to play with a friend of the same age.
However, when Takudzwa failed to return home by 3pm, his grandmother grew concerned and queried his friend about his whereabouts.
The friend revealed that Takudzwa had been left playing at the abandoned sewage plant.
Upon investigation, the grandmother made the harrowing discovery of Takudzwa’s lifeless body floating in the plant’s river.
Police from ZRP Penhalonga were promptly alerted and attended the scene.
The body was subsequently retrieved and ferried to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem.
In a similar incident, a 42-year-old man from Tsanzaguru, Rusape was found floating in Rusape Dam yesterday by Kudakwashe Dengure, who was on a fishing expedition.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka identified the deceased as Blessing Chiwira.
“Dengure noticed the deceased’s body floating in the dam while he was fishing, and reported the matter to Rusape Central Police Station, who attended the scene and retrieved the body,” he said.
