My Oxford Year Cast: Here's Where You've Seen The Stars Of The Netflix Romance Before
Between our ongoing obsession with Emily In Paris and all the recent love for Lena Dunham’s Too Much, it seems we really can’t get enough of an adventure abroad.
Netflix has read the room and promised to keep the romantic jet-setting adventures coming – and the new original movie My Oxford Year looks like it could be a perfect watch for fans of those aforementioned feel-good shows.
Based on Julia Whelan’s bestselling 2018 novel of the same name, My Oxford Year stars Sofia Carson as an ambitious American woman who moves across the pond with a dream of studying at Oxford, where she falls for a charming Brit called Jamie, played by Corey Mylchreest.
The behind-the-scenes team sound just as promising, with a screenplay by Autumn In New York writer Allison Burnett, while The Inbetweeners creator and Bafta nominee Iain Morris is on directing duties.
If you’re looking for some gushy romantic escapism, this might be it – and, you’ll likely recognise a few faces from the cast already. Here’s where you’ve probably seen the cast before…
Sofia Carson
US actor and singer Sofia Carson first rose to global fame thanks to her role as Evie (the daughter of Snow White’s Evil Queen character) in the Disney musical franchise The Descendants, alongside co-stars Dove Cameron, Booboo Stewart and the late Cameron Boyce.
Sofia has since gone on to star in the 2022 military romance Purple Hearts opposite Nicholas Galitzine, Carry-On with Taron Egerton (which just happens to be Netflix’s second most popular English-language film of all time) and The Life List with Kyle Allen.
With My Oxford Year, Sofia looks set to cement her place as a Netflix romance staple.
Corey Mylchreest
Before taking on the leading romantic role in My Oxford Year, you probably know Corey for playing a dashing young King George in the Bridgerton spinoff Queen Charlotte.
Like Sofia, he also has a few Netflix projects under his belt, including The Sandman and the upcoming British drama Hostage, which premieres later this month.
Dougray Scott
The Scottish actor plays Jamie’s dad William in the new movie, but Mission: Impossible fans will best remember Dougray Scott for his performance as the motorbike-riding baddie Sean Ambrose in the franchise’s second instalment.
Besides that, you might have watched him in movies like Twin Town, Deep Impact, Ripley’s Game, My Week with Marilyn and Taken 3, not to mention his TV roles in Taggart, Batwoman, Desperate Housewives and Snatch.
At one point, Dougray was even reportedly tipped to replace Pierce Brosnan as James Bond before he lost out on the role to Daniel Craig.
Catherine McCormack
Catherine McCormack plays Jamie’s on-screen mum, Antonia, whose most iconic role was playing love interest Murron in the Oscar-winning Braveheart opposite Mel Gibson.
She’s also been in Shadow Of The Vampire, Spy Game and 28 Weeks Later, along with recent TV roles in Lockerbie, Slow Horses and Temple.
Harry Trevaldwyn
Harry plays Anna’s roommate and one of her best friends at Oxford, but you’ll have seen him as Tuffnut in the live-action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon, which came out in June of this year.
While his resume also includes a big credit role in The King with Timothée Chalamet, and TV credits in the comedy series Ten Percent, Stephen Merchant’s The Outlaws and the Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte, you might also have come across some of his viral comedy skits on social media.
Poppy Gilbert
After making her TV debut with a guest role in an episode of Call The Midwife, the Swedish actor made a splash in the British mystery drama television series Stay Close with Cush Jumbo and James Nesbitt.
Her other TV credits include The Catch, Chloe and Sherwood.
Esmé Kingdom
Esmé is pretty new to the acting world, but you’ll likely be seeing more of her after My Oxford Year, in which she plays Anna’s friend Maggie.
Before this, her only major credit is a role in the romantic fantasy TV series Fallen.
