Tesla Loses Customers Amid Elon Musk’s Support for Trump
Tesla has seen a sharp drop in U.S. customers after Elon Musk publicly supported Donald Trump, pushing many loyal buyers toward competing electric vehicle brands.
Tesla’s customer base in the United States has dropped to its lowest point in years, following CEO Elon Musk’s public support for U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to a Reuters report on Monday, August 4, citing data from the research firm S&P Global Mobility, Tesla’s customer loyalty fell from 73% in June 2023 to 49.9% by March 2025.
This decline reportedly began after Musk endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential candidacy in July, shortly after an attempted assassination targeting the former president. The situation escalated further in early 2025, when Musk launched a controversial initiative to “optimize” government efficiency, leading to the dismissal of thousands of federal employees.
Experts interviewed by Reuters say that Musk’s increasingly visible political involvement has alienated a significant portion of Tesla’s customer base, many of whom have now shifted to rival electric vehicle (EV) brands.
Tesla is also facing intensifying competition from other major EV manufacturers, including Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, and BMW, which have been expanding their EV lineups and appealing to a broader, more politically neutral consumer base.
Despite these challenges, Tesla remains the top seller of electric vehicles in the U.S., but its global market share has eroded. In the first five months of 2025, Tesla’s sales in the U.S. dropped by 8%, while its European sales plunged by 33%, according to industry data.
Analysts suggest that Tesla’s brand, once synonymous with innovation and environmental leadership, is becoming increasingly politicized—a trend that could harm its long-term appeal, especially among younger, progressive consumers who prioritize corporate neutrality.
Market strategists warn that unless Tesla repositions its public image and distances itself from polarizing politics, the brand may continue to bleed market share to more inclusive and brand-neutral competitors.
As the global EV market continues to evolve, Tesla’s performance will depend not only on technology and production but also on how its leadership navigates the intersection of business, politics, and public trust.
