Ontario Cycling is proud to officially release our new resource package: “How-To Foster a SafeR Space Within Your Recreational Cycling Club.” This comprehensive set of tools is designed to help clubs build more inclusive, welcoming, and psychologically safe environments for cyclists of all identities and experiences.
Rooted in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles, the guide introduces the concept of SafeR Spaces—recognizing that while absolute safety can’t be guaranteed, we can commit to ongoing learning, care, and accountability to create cycling spaces that are safer for all.
This initiative was shaped by the collective wisdom and contributions of community builders and club leaders across Ontario and beyond. Ontario Cycling extends heartfelt thanks to the following clubs and individuals for their time, insight, and leadership:
Ry Shissler (TheyCycle)
Michael Cranwell & Maureen Wolfson (LapDogs Cycling)
Tammy Heidbuurt (New Hope Community Bikes)
Erika Stahl (Gravel Buddies Cycling Club)
Roger Koert & Fernando Resende (Hand Cycling Club of Canada)
Runa Patel (Trailblazers Tandem Cycling Club)
Sequoia Young (Radical Adventure Riders – Champlain Valley Chapter)
Manda Freyman (The MTB Exchange Club)
Jen Gadoua (Handcycling Club of Canada, Ontario Adaptive Riders
Ontario Cycling President & CEO Pam Julian shared, “This project reflects our deep belief that cycling should be a place for everyone. We are grateful for the voices that shaped this resource and proud to support clubs that are actively building a culture of care, connection, and inclusion. This work is not a checklist—it’s a journey we are taking together.”
This resource was created by Sarah Giacomontonio, an advocate, researcher, and inclusive cycling champion, who noted, “I hope this Safer Spaces resource can support cycling clubs in starting and continuing to embrace safety beyond rules. Creating these spaces means fostering a culture of care—where harm is addressed, not ignored, and every member feels respected, supported, and safe. True safety comes from community, and not just compliance.”
