Landon Donovan vs. Christian Pulisic: USMNT legend won’t back down as nine-word blast defends Milan ace criticism after CONCACAF Gold Cup snub
This summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) was meant to serve as a dress rehearsal for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil. But instead of focusing solely on the squad’s preparation, the spotlight fell squarely on a player who wasn’t even on the pitch: Christian Pulisic.
The Milan winger, citing fatigue after a 57-game season, opted to sit out the tournament — a decision made in agreement with the USMNT staff. While many fans and analysts accepted this as a reasonable move, one voice of disapproval — Landon Donovan, a legend of the Stars and Stripes — cut through the noise and sparked a storm of controversy. What followed was a very public dispute between generations, and a nine-word declaration from the 43-year-old that captured his stance.
On May 22, when the US roster for summer friendlies and the Gold Cup was announced, Christian Pulisic was a notable omission. The decision was rooted in concerns over his physical condition. Pulisic had logged more than 7,000 minutes over the last two seasons with Milan, on top of international duty — including 14 appearances for the national team.
“Christian and his team approached the federation and the coaching staff about the possibility of stepping back this summer,” explained U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker. “After thoughtful discussions and careful consideration, we made the collective decision that this is the right moment for him to get the rest he needs.”
Pulisic himself echoed that rationale on CBS Sports’ Call It What You Want: “You can talk about my performances, whatever you want, but to question my commitment — especially towards the national team — in my opinion, that’s way out of line.” He added, “My body started talking to me… Was [it right] to play eight more games and then get no rest at all? That’s not what I thought was best for my body.”
Donovan drew the line
Donovan, however, wasn’t convinced. While speaking on Fox Sports, he appeared to direct his frustration at Pulisic without naming names. “This is what it means to represent your country… If you don’t want to take this seriously and responsibly, then don’t come in. I can’t help but think about some of our guys on vacation… It’s pissing me off.”
His comparison to Cristiano Ronaldo, who continued competing despite age and exhaustion, added fuel to the fire. The comment quickly gained attention — and backlash. Pulisic’s father, Mark Pulisic, clapped back on Instagram, even referencing Donovan’s own sabbatical from international duty in 2012. “Look in the mirror + grow a pair,” he wrote.
The nine-word response to backlash
Amid mounting criticism, Donovan took to The Cooligans podcast to defend his stance and share how it may affect future relationships. “I’m always going to be honest. They don’t have to agree with it — but they know I’m not saying something just to say it,” Donovan said. Then came his pointed declaration: “I’m not just going to sit on the fence.”
He admitted that his bluntness could cost him access to players like Pulisic: “At this point, we’ll never have Christian on our podcast… but that’s a choice I made.”
