‘It will soon be the safest!’: Trump teases major announcement on crime crackdown
President Donald Trump teased a major announcement on Saturday morning related to his ongoing crime crackdown in Washington, D.C. following the assault of a former Trump administration official known as “Big Balls.”
“On Monday, a press conference will be held at the White House which will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.,” Trump wrote Saturday on his social media platform Truth Social. “It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world. It will soon be one of the safest! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Trump’s attention has been fixated on reducing crime in the nation’s capitol since the violent assault of Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old former employee of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, in an attempted carjacking. Just two days after the assault, Trump ordered federal law enforcement officers to patrol the city.
On multiple occasions, Trump has threatened to impose a federal takeover of Washington, D.C., threats that could potentially come to fruition on Monday during the president’s upcoming press conference.
“The federal government should take over the governance of D.C. and run it really, really properly,” Trump said earlier this year.
In the days after Coristine’s assault, Trump has laid blame on Washington, D.C.’s younger population, and advocated for teenagers 14 years and older to be prosecuted as adults in most cases.
“They are not afraid of law enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it’s going to happen now!” Trump wrote in an online post the day of Coristine’s assault. “The law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these ‘minors’ as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14. The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs.”
