“I think as an artist that’s been in the game for as long as I have, you have moments where you take a look back at your career, and you’re like, ‘Okay, what worked for me?’ And I’m like, ‘The rock stuff didn’t work for,’” Demi admitted. “And that’s okay. It was a passion project, and I went back to my roots a little bit with, you know, I grew up listening to in my emo days, the rock stuff. And so I did that as like a passion project.”
Her new album, though, she says it’s more fun.
“I realized what worked for me was ‘Cool for the Summer,’ and these other big pop songs, and I’m like, why don’t I just go back to that? And, it matches my mood, you know what I mean? It feels authentic to where I’m at right now. So, I’m just going to chase that. And I did, and I came up with some really great songs that I’m really proud of and I can’t wait for everyone to get their ears on.”
Demi also shared how she took a different approach to this music, with making the music less personal and a little more fiction, and she’s taking it less seriously than in the past.
“I think it’s just like this era for me is I’m not taking myself too seriously. I think every other era of my life, I’ve written music for my the albums to be like really cathartic and therapeutic and it was just always such intense and heavy topics that I was singing about,” she said. “I went into the studio and I was making this [album], I was trying to find my sound and I started writing like really emotional songs and it just wasn’t resonating because I’m not in that place anymore. I’m not in a bad place in my life where I need to write these really intense emotional songs.”
“I’m happy and I’m in love and it’s just, it’s not that deep anymore. You know what I mean? Like it’s just it’s really not,” Demi continued. “There’s a song called ‘Frequency’ on the album and that was the first song that I came into the studio with and that’s when I found my sound. I was like, okay this is there’s something to this. And I just chased that with my producer Zhone. He’s incredible.”
“Even the emotional songs on the album, like I took a different approach with my writing. I’ve normally always written from like, it has to be authentic. I had to, if I mentioned a date in the song, it had to be real. And this time around, I was in the studio running out of concepts to write about ’cause there’s only so many love songs and so many songs about sex you can write,” she dished. “And so I was running out of topics and I was like, what if I just make stuff up and have fun and write from a fictional point of view, and I did and it was really cool. It was a really cool writing exercise for me. It got me out of my head and even some of the emotional songs on the album are coming from me, but it’s not, I don’t know. I’m just not in that place anymore where I have to write music from a deep dark place.”
Demi adds that the new music is very reflective of where she’s at in her life these days, being happy, in love and feeling free.
“I’m in a place in my life now where I feel free and happy and just loving life. And that’s what this music is really about,” she said. “And also, I mean, there’s a lot of sexually charged songs in the music too, but it’s just like about embracing where I’m at now. And it feels really good, it feels lighthearted. That’s what I think is what I’m chasing with this project is lightheartedness.”
