Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble showcases Zimbabwean culture in South Africa

EZIMNYAMA Dance Ensemble has strengthened its footprint on the regional arts scene after taking part in a cultural exchange programme in South Africa.

The group performed at the Tiro Mpane Foundation National Choral event held in Soshanguve, Johannesburg, where they showcased Zimbabwean dance alongside local choral talent.

Group director Phibion “Fobie” Ncube described the experience as both enlightening and inspiring.
“The experience was amazing. We were warmly welcomed, and the reception was professional. It showed us that positive outcomes can be achieved through collaboration and mutual appreciation, regardless of nationality,” he said.

Fobie credited the group’s participation to Tichaona Huchi, a dedicated musician with the Bulawayo Choral Group, who suggested the collaboration after learning about the choral competition.
“We discussed combining dance and choral music, and when he heard about the competition, he recommended us. It turned out to be a great opportunity to showcase our talent,” Fobie added.

Huchi shared the importance of exporting Zimbabwean arts to other countries.
“Zimbabweans are talented across all arts disciplines. It is our responsibility to market our culture. Ezimnyama did an outstanding job, showing that we are a culturally oriented community,” he said.

The exchange programme highlighted the value of cross-cultural collaboration and reinforced the need for more initiatives that celebrate Zimbabwe’s rich artistic heritage. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
