‘Something is…’: Aakash Chopra’s honest take on KL Rahul making comeback to Indian T20I squad in Asia Cup 2025
The race to secure spots in India’s T20I set-up is getting tough and tough by the day, as the Asia Cup T20 is going to begin in September. The selectors are set to have a meeting and announce the squad for the soon-to-come tournament, and cricketer-turned-expert Aakash Chopra has tuned in the debate of wicketkeeping options.
Since the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, there have been questions on who will be Indian openers during the Asia Cup, and Aakash Chopra has stated that KL Rahul’s perception of slow batting is going to be a factor that is going to affect his comeback to the squad.
“If something is stopping him, it’s his own mindset. Sometimes his legs are shackled, and when the mindset is right, he flies with wings. I feel he has the game. I remember a shot, it was the Indore ground, and he hit Jasprit Bumrah for a six over cover, and I was like wow. However, then you also get knocks when you feel that he should hit, but he thinks differently,” he observed.
With players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill in the line, Aakash Chopra said that KL Rahul might not get considered for the opening spot. Ahead of his splendid outing in England, where he scored more than 500 runs for the first time in Test series, Rahul had made changes to his T20 game.
“He cannot play as an opener because the opening story has ended, unfortunately, for the time being. Sanju Samson is there with Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal is behind them, and I am putting Shubman Gill’s name also at the fourth spot. Four people are standing in the line,” Chopra added.
