US Revokes Over 6,000 Student Visas Under Trump
The Trump administration revoked over 6,000 foreign student visas, citing overstays, crimes, and security concerns, sparking criticism that the policy harms academic freedom and America’s global reputation.
A senior US State Department official has confirmed that the Trump administration has revoked visas for thousands of foreign students, citing immigration violations, criminal offenses, and, in some cases, security concerns.
According to the official, more than 6,000 students have lost their visas. The majority of cases were due to overstaying legal residency limits or breaching visa regulations.
Around 4,000 visas were revoked over criminal offenses, including assault, drunk or drug-impaired driving, and theft, the State Department disclosed.
Between 200 and 300 visas were also canceled on grounds of terrorism-related concerns. Officials noted that the measure aligns with the Trump administration’s broader push to tighten immigration control.
The crackdown is part of a policy that introduced stricter background checks, monitoring of applicants’ social media, and tougher overall screening of visa requests.
Trump’s immigration policies have faced heavy criticism both domestically and internationally. The mass cancellation of student visas has further fueled tensions, particularly after student protests in the United States against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Critics argue that the move not only undermines civil liberties but also damages America’s academic reputation, discouraging international talent from pursuing higher education in the United States.
The decision reflects a broader trend of restrictive immigration measures under Trump, raising concerns about their long-term impact on US universities and the country’s global standing.
