Mariah will also perform a career-spanning medley of her biggest hits — her first performance at the VMAs in 20 years.
She last delivered a medley in 2005 that included her No. 1 smash “We Belong Together,” from her multi-platinum album The Emancipation of Mimi, which just celebrated its 20th anniversary.
Mariah first hit the VMAs stage back in 1991 with a stunning performance of “Emotions,” showcasing her famous five-octave vocal range. In 1998, she joined Whitney Houston for an unforgettable pop culture moment when the two superstars wore matching dresses as a joke while opening the show.
Known for her iconic music videos including “Honey,” “Heartbreaker,” “Obsessed,” “Touch My Body,” “Breakdown,” and “#Beautiful,” Mariah has sold more than 220 million albums worldwide and earned 19 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, the most by any solo artist in history.
She is gearing up to release her 16th studio album Here For It All on September 26. Its lead single “Type Dangerous” is nominated for Best R&B at this year’s VMAs.
Previous recipients of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award include Katy Perry, Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliott.
