'Americana' Director Tony Tost Defends Sydney Sweeney Movie as 'Hidden Gem'
Tony Tost isn’t taking the reactions to his directorial debut to heart.
The director’s first movie, Americana, stars Sydney Sweeney and opened to lukewarm numbers at the box office. The movie opened to $500,000 during its first weekend, but Tony isn’t letting the reactions get to him.
On Thursday (August 21), Tony took to X to talk about his experience with his directorial debut and the reactions to the film.

“One of the great things about movies is that they outlive the zeitgeist into which they were released,” Tony wrote on X. “As someone whose first film sorta got gobbled up by the zeitgeist, I’ll be curious to see how it’ll stand up after this moment is over. Hopefully fairly well!”
Americana was released as Sydney was getting massive backlash around the internet for her American Eagle campaign. In his social media post, Tony says that his movie was “gobbled up” by the criticism against Sydney, who stars in the movie, and that he hopes it finds a new audience after the discussion dies down.
In another post, Tony continued on to say he used Letterboxd to document his creative process. He wrote, “Seemed like a fun thing to do. Even back then, I knew I was creating a ‘hidden gem’ type movie (as opposed to a blockbuster, or auteur masterpiece).”
