Amateur Archaeolgists Uncover Stunning Artifacts Dating Back Centuries

0

Amateur archaeologists excavating a wooded site have uncovered stunning artifacts dating back to the 5th century, History Scout reported.

The remarkable discovery was made in Poland’s Grodziec Forest District, in Kalisz, earlier this summer during a five-week dig led by the Denar Kalisz Group and the city’s Voivodeship Office of Environmental Protection. The cache included not just one but three separate hoards containing treasure and other artifacts, including a 5th-century Gothic gold necklace which weighs almost half a pound and a ceramic pot which researchers believe was buried more than 1,500 years ago. This would date the hoards back to the Migration Period in medieval Europe.

The excavation was conducted on grounds which were formerly a Roman-period burial site for the Przeworsk people. Here, researchers found a grave plot belonging to a warrior which contained a spearhead and a shield, shedding light on the area’s culture during the time of antiquity.

Days Later, Even More Artifacts Were Recovered

A few days later, the team returned to the site and recovered even more artifacts, such as a coin dating back to the 11th-century and a ceramic pot which was embossed with intricate striations. Whomever buried the pot had used soil to seal its top, so it had to be opened under controlled conditions by experts with Kalisz’s University of Science. When they finally prised the vessel open, they found 631 coins which matched the single coin found nearby.

Then, in July, researchers found the third hoard. It contained a remarkable treasure which experts first believed was a bracelet. In fact, it was a gold torc. A gold torc was a solid necklace designed with a loop-and-closure mechanism. It, too, dates back to the 5th century and is related to the Goths who lived in the region during the Migration Period. The gold torc has been handed over to the Kalisz Regional Museum, where after analysis and preservation it will be put on display for the public.
