India to Review National Security Impact of Saudi-Pakistan Mutual Defence Pact
India said it will carefully assess the Saudi-Pakistan mutual defence pact, reviewing its potential impact on national security, regional balance, and global strategic stability.
India has responded cautiously to the new strategic defense pact signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, stating it will examine the implications for its national security, as well as for regional and global stability. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a Thursday statement that New Delhi had been aware the agreement was under consideration.
On Wednesday in Riyadh, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the mutual defense treaty. Under the pact, any attack on one country will be treated as an attack on the other.
India emphasized that it remains fully committed to safeguarding its national interests and ensuring security across all domains, regardless of shifting regional alliances.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where states traditionally reliant on U.S. security backing were shaken by recent Israeli rocket strikes targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar.
A senior Saudi official told the Financial Times that the agreement aims to strengthen deterrence, describing it as a comprehensive defense framework that would employ all necessary military and defensive tools depending on the nature of any threat.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the pact builds on decades of historic partnership and Islamic solidarity, reflecting shared strategic interests and a commitment to closer defense cooperation. Prime Minister Sharif was accompanied by Army Chief General Asim Munir during the Riyadh visit to finalize the deal.
The Saudi-Pakistan agreement marks a significant new layer in regional security alignments, signaling a shift away from reliance on Washington and toward bilateral defense commitments.
For India, the pact represents both a challenge and an opportunity—requiring careful assessment of evolving Gulf dynamics while reaffirming its own regional security posture.
