Gridlock alert in effect on first day of UN General Assembly
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – More than 200 heads of state and their entourages have descended upon New York City to mark the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly this week.
Increased NYPD patrols have been seen across Midtown, along with counterterrorism units and Secret Service agents from around the world. Security zones were put into place by the Coast Guard along the East River between East 36th Street and the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge at 59th Street.
Mass transit will be the public’s best way to get around Manhattan this week, according to the Department of Transportation.
The UN General Assembly starts with a high-level meeting on Monday to commemorate the 80th anniversary. Officials tell PIX11 News there is no credible threat, but New Yorkers are asked to stay vigilant to help keep the city safe.
