Global Citizen Festival draws crowd to Central Park's Great Lawn

CENTRAL PARK, Manhattan (PIX11) — Thousands of music fans are in Central Park’s Great Lawn for the return of the Global Citizen Festival.

It’s a night filled with stars from the entertainment world performing alongside policymakers and activists.

South African superstar Tyla singing "Water" mesmerized this crowd of over 60,000 on the Great Lawn.

This is the 13th annual Global Citizen Festival, featuring headliners like Cardi B and Shakira, with Hugh Jackman as the host.

Many attendees were excited to see Mariah the Scientist in person.

The tickets are free.

All those in attendance are said to have supported the Global Citizen’s mission to end extreme poverty, defend the Earth from climate change, and demand equal access to nutritious food worldwide.

Many of those volunteering started really young, like 13-year-old Samara Osae-Asare from the Parkchester section of the Bronx.

“You have to earn points by doing humanitarian work,” Osae-Asare told PIX11 News.

Many of those in attendance traveled great distances to be here, like Mateus Ferrer from Brazil and Mia Abdallah from Lebanon.

“It’s fantastic being here for people to come together to raise awareness about so many issues like the Amazon,” Ferrer, a Global Citizen, told PIX11 News.

Mia Abdallah, another global citizen, agreed.

“It is so great seeing all these cultures coming together,” Abdallah told PIX11 News.
