New Delhi: Former India spinner Sunil Joshi is set to take over as the new spin bowling coach at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru starting October 1. The 55-year-old played an active role in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy and also accompanied the India A team for their matches against Australia A in Lucknow.

Joshi was a member of Punjab Kings coaching staff led by Ricky Ponting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) the previous season, his departure means PBKS will now need to find a new assistant coach.

Joshi’s coaching background helped him edged out competitors

Several candidates were considered for the role earlier this year, but Joshi’s impressive coaching background helped him edged out competitors like Rakesh Dhruv and Nooshin Al Khadeer, the current coach of the India U-19 women’s team.

In addition to his IPL experience, Joshi was the spin bowling consultant for the Bangladesh team and had coached Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit.

Sairaj Bahutale was the spin bowling coach before Sunil Joshi

Before Joshi, Sairaj Bahutale served as the spin bowling coach at the CoE, formerly known as the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He left the role to take up a similar position with Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier league.

In March this year, the BCCI invited applications for the CoE role, stating that the “role is integral to the development and performance enhancement of India’s spin bowling talent across all formats and age groups including India Senior Teams (Men & Women), India A, U-23, U-19, U-16, and U-15 squads and State association players training at the BCCI COE.”

In order to find, develop, and nurture future spin talent, Joshi will work closely with CoE Head VVS Laxman. His responsibilities will extend beyond upcoming players, also involving regular training and guidance for current Indian team spinners as well as those training at the CoE.
