NORTHUMBERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Two people have been injured following a bonfire explosion in the town of Northumberland on Saturday, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office. The incident reportedly occurred on Starks Knob Road.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene at about 8:40 p.m. following a report of a loud explosion. An investigation found that a group of people were having a bonfire when at least one metal drum containing combustible material exploded, authorities said.
Two victims were taken by private car to Saratoga Hospital for evaluation and treatment of burn injuries, the sheriff's office said. One of the victims was then taken by EMS to the Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
According to authorities, the hosts of the bonfire had not known about the metal drum's presence prior to the explosion. An investigation remains ongoing.
