New Details Emerge From Terence Crawford's Police Encounter

0

Police in Omaha, Nebraska say boxer Terence "Bud" Crawford was driving at a "high rate of speed" when he was pulled over in a now-viral incident over the weekend.

According to police documents obtained by TMZ, Crawford sped past two officers in a blue sedan at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The cops pulled Crawford over and eventually ordered the Omaha native and the three other occupants of the car out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

“While speaking with the driver, an officer observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard,” police previously said in a press release. “For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

“The driver was later identified as Mr. Crawford upon verification of his driver’s license and was issued a citation for reckless driving. One passenger, a member of Mr. Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm."

All four occupants of the car are legally allowed to carry a firearm, police said. The official citation did not mention officers pulling guns, simply saying Crawford was "cited and release for reckless driving."

Footage of incident spread immediately

Video of the encounter, which included Crawford exiting the car at gunpoint, was widely circulated on social media.

The undefeated world champion, who turned 38 on Sunday, was in his hometown to celebrate his recent win over Canelo Alvarez.

"Understand that my heart dropped in learning of this end to an otherwise wonderful day and evening celebrating our city’s world boxing champion," Omaha mayor John Ewing Jr. said following the situation. "We held a great parade and great event at Heartland of America park. The evening birthday party at Steelhouse, which I and members of my team attended, was a showing of joy and pride. Omaha needs to remember this important day as a good one while we seek answers to how it ended.

"Meanwhile, we must ensure that every resident, no matter who they are, feels safe and respected in Omaha."

Both Ewing and Omaha police chief Todd Schmaderer promised an internal affairs investigation.

Crawford due in court

According to the citation, Crawford has a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 2 at 9 a.m.

So far, the 18-time world title holder has not commented on the matter.
