2 in serious but stable condition after accident on I-90

CHATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Two people are in serious but stable condition after a two-car accident on the Berkshire Connector Tuesday afternoon. According to New York State Police, the accident happened around 3:25 p.m., just after exit B2 on I-90 westbound in the town of Chatham.

Troopers said the accident involved a tractor-trailer and a jeep. According to troopers, a preliminary investigation determined a 2016 Kenworth tractor-trailer was parked on the right shoulder when it was hit from behind by a 2022 jeep.

The Columbia County Fire Coordinator Office said when crews arrived on scene, they determined the driver and passenger in the jeep were trapped inside the car. Crews on scene then requested LifeNet and a Trauma Physician from Albany Medical Center.

State Police said the driver of the Jeep was later transported to Albany Medical Center, and the passenger was airlifted.

"This very serious accident scene was hectic and dangerous for firefighters. But with professional teamwork it was handled with excellence," Fire Coordinator George Keeler said.

According to Keeler, the Tri-Village Fire Company, East Chatham Fire, Chatham Fire, fire coordinators and EMS crews worked to treat and extricate the victims.

State Police said an investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
