Donald Trump unveils ‘tone deaf’ new White House toilet inspired by former president

President Donald Trump has proudly revealed his latest White House project, and it is just as tasteful as one might expect.

On Friday, he unveiled photos of a renovated bathroom, decked out with black and white marble, gold taps and a crystal chandelier.

The room is part of one of the main guest suites in the historic building, called the Lincoln Bedroom.

Trump wrote: ‘This was very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there!’

The bathroom had been redone in the 1940s with what Trump called an ‘art deco green tile style,’ which he said was ‘totally inappropriate for the Lincoln Era.’

‘I ripped it apart,’ he told supporters earlier this month.

‘We built a bathroom that’s absolutely gorgeous and totally keeping in that time because the Lincoln bedroom is so incredible for those of you who have seen it.’

Historians might think otherwise. The Lincoln Bedroom is known for its wallpaper, drapes and elderly furniture, rather than gleaming gold faucets.

An 1862 newspaper described the rooms as ‘very neatly papered, but should be better furnished. All the furniture is exceedingly old, and is too ricketty to venerate’.

Trump has already demolished the entire East Wing of the White House to build a £187 million ballroom which, according to reports, he is planning to name after himself.

The White House has said that Trump’s ballroom, set to be lavishly decorated with chandeliers and ornate columns, will be completed before he leaves office in January 2029 but the project is ambitious.

It seems the new bathroom has been completed with the real estate developer’s signature flourishes.

Pictures of the bathrooms at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida resort, have previously shown rooms decorated in dark marble with gold accents on taps and handles.

Democrats took the chance to criticise Trump’s priorities, pointing out that the US government shutdown has dragged on for a whole month now.

‘Donald Trump actually cares more about his toilet than he does about fixing your healthcare,’ wrote Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer on X.

‘Millions of people are being kicked off of food assistance and millions can’t afford health care anymore. But don’t worry everyone! Trump got a new bathroom,’ said Democratic commentator Harry Sisson.

He called the move ‘so tone deaf, out of touch, and disgusting’.

According to CNBC, White House spokesman Davis Ingle hit back: ‘Democrats are more concerned with President Trump’s historic beautification of the White House than they are for American citizens they are hurting because of their reckless government shutdown.’
