Restaurants give out free food during SNAP suspension

0

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- The ongoing government shutdown means millions of New Yorkers have stopped receiving their SNAP benefits.

Food pantries, non-profits and restaurants are stepping up with free meals to make sure New Yorkers have food on the table. To see a map of food pantries across the city, click here.

In Brooklyn, Je T'aime Patisserie will be giving out free breakfast to anyone who shows their SNAP or EBT card, according to owner Jatee Kearsley. Kearsley is also accepting donations to help fund the free breakfasts.

"Although the government really isn't caring, we care," Kearsley said in a post to Instagram. "There's no gimmicks, that's it. If you have your food stamp card and you're hungry... we will give you a free coffee or tea and a free pastry."

Here's a list of restaurants giving out free food to people who've lost their SNAP benefits:

  • Je T'aime Patisserie, Bed-Stuy
    • Free breakfast for anyone with a SNAP/EBT card
  • Charles Pan-Fried Chicken, Harlem
