Live updates: Trump administration faces SNAP funding deadline as shutdown nears longest ever

0

The Senate on Monday will return to Washington, where it will convene this afternoon on Day 34 of the government shutdown.

Both Democrats and Republicans are looking for an off-ramp as the government's closure inches toward the longest in U.S. history. A group of moderate Senate Democrats have even been quietly gathering to plot how to possibly reopen the federal government.

The upper chamber will vote on the House-passed GOP funding bill for a 16th time this evening.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) still remains top of mind for lawmakers on both sides of the aisle after a judge ordered the Trump administration to use emergency funds to release benefits. The White House faces a Monday deadline to respond after the program lapsed Saturday.

Last night, President Trump returned to CBS's "60 Minutes" for the first time after settling a $16 million settlement with its parent company earlier this year. He discussed everything from nuclear weapon testing to the government shutdown and Tuesday's New York City mayoral election.

He also indicated Sunday that he will not attend Wednesday's Supreme Court arguments about his sweeping tariff agenda, after previously stating he'd do so.

Later Monday, Trump will join virtual rallies in support of Republican candidates in Virginia and New Jersey ahead of Tuesday's gubernatorial election.
