Bethlehem CSD mourns loss of longtime French teacher
BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Bethlehem Central School District is mourning the loss of a longtime high school French teacher. School officials said Michele Atallah died on Sunday following a battle with cancer.
Atallah had been a teacher at Bethlehem schools for more than 37 years, most recently teaching advanced French courses and also previously serving as a faculty advisor for several student clubs and organizations. Her colleagues said that she was known throughout the district not only for her French expertise but also for her passion for public education, civic engagement and human rights.
"Behind the trademark twinkle in her eye was a thinker, a fighter and a rebel for the causes and the people she cared about," said Bethlehem CSD Superintendent Jody Monroe. "She was deeply committed to making this world a better place, and the world is a better place because of her."
Atallah had reportedly been on medical leave since September and had not been teaching in the current school year. Still, school officials said she was popular among both students and staff.
"Lessons were not simply reserved for her French students; Michele Atallah taught us all," said Bethlehem High School Principal Dave Doemel. "She brought unmatched energy to the high school every year, and was rewarded for it with the deepest respect of students, colleagues and one grateful principal."
Atallah is survived by her husband and two children. Details about remembrance ceremonies will be shared by the Bethlehem Central School District once they become available.
