David Beckham Officially Receives Major Honor

0

English soccer legend David Beckham was bestowed with the title of "Sir" during an Investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle in his native London on Tuesday.

Beckham, 50, received the honor from King Charles III for his “services to sport and charity.” It was the culmination of an emotional stretch for the former Manchester United star, whose wife Victoria also received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2017.

"I cried when I first found out, and possibly for a few months after it as well," David told reporters following the event, via E News. "But this week has been really emotional because being back in London and obviously, on the lead-up to this day, it's been not stressful, I've not been nervous. I've just been emotional."

Beckham, who represented his country at the highest levels of soccer as a member of the national team from 1996-2009, said he "couldn't be prouder" to be knighted.

"People know how patriotic I am - I love my country," Beckham said, via the BBC.

"I've always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I'm lucky enough to have travelled around the world and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. It makes me proud."

Victoria shares emotional message on social media

Beckham was supported on the day by his wife, three of their four children and his parents, Ted Beckham and Sandra West.

Victoria Beckham also wrote a heartfelt message to her husband in an Instagram post.

"David, from the moment I met you 28 years ago, you’ve always been so proud to represent your country," she said. "Whether on or off the pitch, no one loves England or respects our Royal Family more, so to see you honoured by The King today is something I’ll forever cherish.

"You’ve achieved so much, and yet you’re still the same kind, humble, hardworking man I met nearly 30 years ago, as well as the most amazing husband and father. I’ve never felt prouder than I do today. Sir @davidbeckham, we all love you so much xx."

Why did Brooklyn Beckham skip the ceremony?

Three of David and Victoria's four children--Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14--were at Windsor Castle Tuesday, but the eldest Beckham child, Brooklyn, 26, was not.

His absence is the latest step in an ongoing feud between Brooklyn and his family, which also involves his wife, actress Nicola Peltz.
