The Bolivian Supreme Court of Justice has annulled the 10-year prison sentence against former interim President Jeanine Áñez, ordering her immediate release. The court also mandates a political trial, as requested by her defense. Áñez was convicted in June 2022 for assuming the presidency during a controversial session of the National Assembly. This occurred amid the deadly 2019 protests that led to the resignation of then-president Evo Morales. The protests, which resulted in 37 deaths, followed a crisis after elections where Morales won another term, despite allegations of fraud by the Organization of American States.
