A Norwegian public transport operator plans to tighten security after tests on Chinese-made electric buses revealed the manufacturer could remotely turn them off. The operator, Ruter, said test results showed that bus maker Yutong Group had access to bus control systems for updates and diagnostics. It said that in theory, buses “can be stopped or rendered inoperable by the manufacturer.” Yutong stated that data is stored in Germany and used only for maintenance. Concerns about remote control of electric vehicles are not new, with similar issues arising in the U.S. Ruter says it will implement stronger cybersecurity measures to prevent hacking.
