Paul Merson risks angering Tottenham fans with his Brentford score prediction
Paul Merson has delivered his verdict ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Brentford, and it is not a prediction that will go down well with Spurs supporters.
Tottenham Hotspur have a little over three days of rest before they take to the pitch and build on their most recent league win over Crystal Palace when they face Brentford.
The Bees, however, are a side in hot form, having beaten Bournemouth 4-1 last time out thanks to a hat-trick from Kevin Schade.
Keith Andrews’ side is also currently ahead of Thomas Frank, who left Brentford to become boss at Spurs, but a win here will see the Dane move above Brentford as Tottenham look to close the gap on the top four.
Paul Merson predicts Tottenham vs Brentford
Looking ahead to Thursday night’s clash, Paul Merson has now given his score prediction for the clash between Spurs and Brentford.
The former Arsenal man outlined why he believes Brentford will have the edge, pointing to their home form and Tottenham’s recent struggles.
Explaining his thinking before delivering his score prediction, Merson highlighted the pressure Spurs face away from home and their inconsistency this season.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson said: “You have to show Brentford respect when they are playing at home. They have 20 points in games played at their own stadium this season. They thrashed Bournemouth 4-1 last weekend.
“Tottenham are first in the table if you only consider away games though. Spurs are bottling games only at home. The spotlight on them in front of their own fans could be the reason.
“If Thomas Frank can help Tottenham beat Brentford on his return to his former club, Spurs are back in the race for the top five. After the trip to Brentford, they face Sunderland, Bournemouth, West Ham United and Burnley in the league. It is not the toughest of runs to put a run together.
“But we are talking about Spurs here. They are one of only two teams this season to give a point to Wolverhampton Wanderers and that just shows how unreliable they are as a unit. Tottenham are not playing great football and I think they will get caught out by Brentford in this one.”

Why Spurs cannot afford another slip-up
A defeat is something Frank will be desperately hoping his side avoids when they face Brentford on Thursday night.
Spurs are one of the last sides to play in this round of fixtures and, as a result, they are well aware of the results involving their top-four rivals.
Chelsea were held to a draw against Bournemouth this gameweek, while Manchester United could not beat bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.
As such, a victory for Spurs over Brentford will not only move them into the top half of the table but also close the gap to the top five to two points.
