Georgia lawmakers are moving to void a Savannah ordinance that fines or jails people for leaving guns in unlocked cars. The state Senate approved the measure Monday, sending it to Gov. Brian Kemp for his signature or veto. The bill prevents cities from regulating gun storage. Gun owners could sue local governments for violating the law, collecting at least $25,000 in damages. Savannah's ordinance aimed to reduce gun thefts. But gun rights advocates say it actually punished victims of gun theft. Mayor Van Johnson says the city will stop enforcing the ordinance if the bill becomes law, although Savannah may consider other safety measures.
