CSUN students help low-income taxpayers with their IRS paperwork

0

It’s that time of the year when California State University, Northridge launches its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help low-income taxpayers with the paperwork required by the Internal Revenue Service. Trained VITA student volunteers offer free advice for anyone with an annual income of $69,000 or less. And VITA serves non-English speakers.

Free tax preparation services will begin the last week of January and be offered until April 15. Taxpayers can get help Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursdays until 10 p.m., at CSUN’s Bookstein Hall, near the corner of Plummer Street and Etiwanda Avenue.

CSUN’s VITA program also has 17 other sites across Los Angeles County, including Glendale Library, North Hollywood Public Library, Pacoima Public Library, Panorama City Public Library, San Fernando Public Library, Sun Valley Public Library, and Valley Plaza Branch Library.

All sites are staffed by IRS-certified student volunteers under the supervision of CSUN faculty. More than 300 trained students will offer their help. Last year the CSUN student volunteers prepared 10,649 income tax returns. To make an appointment and check eligibility: https://w2.csun.edu/CSUN-VITA-Clinic
