'Teen Mom' Star Farrah Abraham Pivots from Austin's Mayoral Race to City Council: 'I'm Very Serious About This'

Former MTV reality star Farrah Abraham has political ambitions.

The 34-year-old submitted paperwork to run for the Austin, Texas mayoral race earlier this week, despite the race not happening until 2028.

After learning the race is over two years away during a TMZ Live interview, Farrah has since begun eying her a seat on the District 5 city council instead.

KXAN Austin news reports that her team refiled the forms on Thursday (January 15).

“I reached out to the city and I just was like, ‘hey, I’m very serious about this … I love this city and I want to get involved in and help where I live and breathe, and I know I can help because I’m making it, others seem to be struggling, and I want to jump in the mix,’” Farrah told the outlet. “If I could be a district seat and I could be mayor at the same time, I probably would do it.”

While she grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, she has lived in Austin since 2013.

The Teen Mom alum says she is primarily motivated to run because of housing affordability.

She wants to work with brokers and realtor associations to fix things “because we have like, 2008 tax laws for closing on homes that just really isn’t working for the Austin market, which is full of 1099s creatives and … self-employed people.”

KXAN notes that city council members are unable to change state tax laws or impact federal income taxes.

“They don’t have to feel like they’re moving farther and farther out of Austin. Like all of my friends just keep moving out,” Farrah added. “My rent for what I was renting downtown just doubled … maybe tripled.

As for her what she thinks about her current district city council member Ryan Alter, she says she doesn’t know anything about him.

Farrah said, “I don’t even know who’s in District 5, maybe their names just like aren’t big names or something. They just don’t come up where I work.”

“People definitely are not enthused with people who are in charge of the city or districts or mayor,” she concluded.

Farrah isn’t the only social media star looking to get into politics. Trisha Paytas also recently said she’s mulling a run for Congress in 2026.
