Driver hits, kills pedestrian in San Mateo
SAN MATEO — A driver hit and killed a pedestrian Friday morning in San Mateo, police said.
The collision happened around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of South El Camino Real and 17th Avenue, according to the San Mateo Police Department. Officers arrived to find the pedestrian, described only as a woman, suffering from critical injuries.
Police said the woman was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Her identity was not released Friday.
The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Citing preliminary information, police said the driver turned north from Bovet Road onto South El Camino and hit the pedestrian in the north crosswalk of South El Camino Real at 17th Avenue. Bovet Road becomes 17th Avenue on the east side of the intersection.
Lanes of South El Camino Real and the westbound Highway 92 off-ramp to South El Camino Real were closed for roughly three hours following the collision, police said.
