I Survived an Abortion, Which Makes It Clear Abortions Kill Babies

0

On January 23, over 100,000 gathered in Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life. They came from diverse backgrounds—an acknowledge that few in the media concede.

But we are united by one truth: life is a gift. For me, that truth isn’t just a slogan. It’s a reality I live with every day.

I am alive because in 1977 I survived the saline infusion abortion intended to end my life. Thanks to timely and adequate medical care, I lived.

Because I lived, I built a meaningful life. I have loved and been loved. I have struggled. I have grown.

I became a wife and mother. My daughters would not exist if I had not survived my own abortion.

That reality—a mix of sobriety and hope—grounds me as I reflect further, especially when considering what survival means for others.

For instance, at each March for Life, I reflect on how, when a child survives an abortion, generations are changed. Despite overwhelming fear, when a mother chooses life, her decision echoes far into the future.

I also think of women like my own mother. Their journeys reveal not only pain, shame, and confusion, but also enduring love and remarkable courage.

My mother’s life mattered. My life mattered. Together, we learned that healing is possible after abortion.

Building on these reflections, this year I think of women like Sarah Hurm. She will speak at the March for Life about abortion pill reversal and how that saved her son’s life.

Sarah’s story powerfully reminds us that hope can break through, even when abortion seems like the only option.

She now lives knowing that her life—and her child’s life—are gifts.

As CEO of The Abortion Survivors Network, I walk with abortion survivors, mothers, and families every day. Their stories differ, but they reveal the same truth: life endures, even when our culture insists it shouldn’t.

The March for Life is about people. For many, speaking up for the value of every human life is viewed as countercultural.

What can you do? Start by talking with a friend, writing a post, or sharing your story. When we share, we show that every life—ours, those around us, the preborn, and mothers—is a gift, not just a headline.

Start honest conversations, share your story, and show bold compassion where you are.

Changed hearts lead to changed minds—and changed minds lead to lasting cultural and policy change and the lives of untold numbers of unborn children saved.

Restoring a culture of life begins where? With us.
