Eric Stonestreet is opening up about his secret wedding!

If you didn’t know, the 54-year-old Emmy-winning actor married Lindsay Schweitzer in September 2025 in a very intimate wedding only attended by family members.

While appearing on his former Modern Family co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s podcast Dinner’s on Me, Eric explained why he and his new wife kept their wedding a secret from almost all of their loved ones and shared why none of his former co-stars were invited.

Keep reading to find out more…Eric explained that a small group of people were told about the wedding via phone calls just before the ceremony. The remainder of his and Lindsay‘s family and friends found out about the wedding shortly after the tied the knot, before their marriage news broke publicly.

“I hate saying it, but, like, we didn’t invite anyone to our wedding other than our family,” Eric shared. “So the equivalent to an invitation to our wedding was a phone call before the wedding, which was, ‘This is your non-invitation, but this is because we love you and we want you to know about it first.’”

“So there was a group of people that we called and told,” he recalled. “Then, we got married, and I had a text all set up, ready to go, and then the moment we got married, we just sent it out to everyone, other people, because, you know, I’m a popular person. I didn’t want to offend anyone, but I also didn’t want to tell anyone.”

He continued, “We wanted it to be a secret because we were keeping it from our family, so it’s not like now all of a sudden I’m gonna let everyone know, I’m not my mom, but I just couldn’t imagine us getting married and you not knowing about it and other people not knowing about it.”

Even the couple’s kids, Lindsay‘s twin sons from a previous relationship, “didn’t know until the day of” when they got home from school because they “didn’t want them to have to lie or be weird at school.”

“When they got home from school, we sat them down and just had a talk with them and told them… And they were just like, ‘What?’” Eric recalled, adding that his other relatives had no idea they were coming over for a wedding, and were under the impression they were coming over for a “family picture” and “first meal in the home.”

Before the news broke publicly, Eric called Jesse and told him that he and Lindsay had gotten married. Jesse said that he was grateful to be one of the select few to know about the wedding, admitting that he would have had mixed feelings if Eric didn’t tell him.

“I’m definitely glad you called me,” Jesse said. “I would’ve been, I don’t think hurt is the right word, but I would’ve been surprised.”

Eric explained that their wedding date, September 8, holds a lot of significance for the couple as his birthday is the day before and Lindsay‘s is the day after.

“Lindsey had wanted that date forever, and we didn’t wanna wait another year,” he said. “So hopefully now we’re married and we’ll have a party at some point and invite everybody to come.”

Also during his appearance, Eric and Jesse looked back at their favorite Modern Family memories.
