Elena Rybakina Wins Australian Open After Stunning Comeback Against Aryna Sabalenka
Elena Rybakina captures her second career Grand Slam singles title on Saturday (January 31) at Melbourne’s Australian Open tennis tournament.
The 26-year-old Kazakhstani star defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three set final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, inside Rod Laver Arena.
Elena recorded her 10th consecutive victory over a Top 10 opponent, a feat achieved by only five women this century (Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Iga Swiatek).
“It’s hard to find words but I want to congratulate Aryna for amazing results for a couple of years,” Elena, who pulled in $2.75 million in prize money, shared during her victory speech. “I know it’s tough, but I hope we’re going to play many more finals together.”
The win marks Elena‘s first major title since Wimbledon 2022, with coach Stefano Vukov playing a pivotal role in both of her Grand Slam successes.
