White Sox Could Soon Be Facing A Tough Choice With Their Infielders

0

The White Sox have had a very strong offseason, as they added some very good players on team-friendly deals. The additions of Anthony Kay and Munetaka Murakami could be very impactful for the team, as both were very successful last season in the Nippon Professional Baseball League.

The one major subtraction from the team this off-season was Luis Robert Jr., as he was recently traded to the New York Mets. However, it could turn out to be a positive for the White Sox, as they were able to use that money to sign Seranthony Dominguez and Austin Hays. It could also allow them to add another starting pitcher.

However, Luis Robert Jr. may not be the only notable player to be shipped off the White Sox this off-season, as Adrian White of Future Sox reports that teams have been calling about Miguel Vargas over the last few weeks.

This is a very interesting report, as Miguel Vargas had a breakout season for the White Sox in 2025. In 138 games, he hit .234, adding 16 home runs and 60 RBIs. He also added 32 doubles, which was among the best in the league. This was a good bounce back year for Vargas, as he didn’t have the debut he would have liked with the White Sox in 2024.

I certainly can see why teams would be calling on Vargas, as he is just 26 years old and is a player on the rise. Ever since Vargas fixed his swing in late April, he was one of the better hitters on the White Sox and he showed why he was a former consensus top-50 prospect in baseball.

I doubt the White Sox will end up trading Vargas, as White notes in his article that at this point, the interest seems “exploratory.” However, I am always in favor of listening on almost everyone on your roster, as sometimes an offer can be too good to pass up.

At this point trading Vargas would make little sense. While the White Sox currently have a crowded infield and a stacked infield group in their farm system (which will soon add Roch Cholowsky), most of those players, like Vargas, are young and still haven’t proven much yet. Once you get a clearer picture of what these guys can be, then you can start moving off players. You would hate to trade a guy that turns into a stud, while the guy you keep ends up being a bust.

I would not trade Vargas unless it was for a deal you could absolutely not refuse. I expect him to have a huge year and be one of the better hitters on the White Sox. With that being said, the White Sox will likely have some tough decisions to make if Vargas, Montgomery, Meidroth, Murakami all play well, and guys like Caleb Bonemer, Billy Carlson, and Sam Antonacci continue to climb prospect rankings. For once, the White Sox may have a good problem on their hands.
