Russian FM Says Afghanistan Key Security Concern for CSTO

0

Russia says security risks and developments in Afghanistan remain central concerns for the CSTO amid evolving regional threats.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said security developments in Central Asia and Afghanistan remain central issues for the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Lavrov made the remarks Monday during talks in Moscow with CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov, highlighting emerging regional threats facing member states.

He said new security challenges, especially those linked to instability and militant activity near Central Asian borders, remain high on the organization’s agenda.

The CSTO is a regional military alliance that includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, with collective defense commitments among members.

Security conditions in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power continue to be closely monitored by neighboring countries concerned about regional stability and cross-border threats.

Central Asian states have repeatedly voiced concerns over possible spillover of extremism, illegal trafficking and refugee pressures stemming from instability in Afghanistan over recent years.

The CSTO has conducted joint military exercises and strengthened border cooperation among member countries to prepare for potential regional security challenges linked to Afghanistan.
