Tottenham’s top 10 misses and maybes from the January transfer window, including Yan Diomande

0

With the January transfer window now closed, it’s time to look back at all the players Tottenham almost signed, were linked to, or had their eye on.

It’s been a disappointing month for Spurs in the transfer market, with Thomas Frank not really getting the reinforcements he needed to improve the squad.

Frank has promised fans a busy summer of deals, but that’s not good enough, really. The Lilywhites need new players now, especially in the midst of an injury crisis.

So, while we don’t have much to celebrate in terms of new arrivals, we can at least look back and lament all the targets Spurs missed out on.

Ten transfer targets Tottenham missed out on in January

10. Crysencio Summerville was linked with Tottenham

After he scored and helped West Ham to a win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Crysencio Summerville became a target for Spurs. The Lilywhites were said to be readying a £25m bid for the winger, but nothing came of it. While he’s not exactly a world-beater, he’s arguably more productive than the options Spurs currently have on the wings.

9. Spurs went for Conor Gallagher over Curtis Jones

Another Premier League star Spurs were looking at is Curtis Jones, with the Liverpool midfielder edging closer to an Anfield exit as he fights for game time at his boyhood club. Tottenham were going to bid £30m for Jones, apparently, but whether the player actually wanted to join is another matter.

8. Omar Marmoush stayed at Man City

The reports linking Omar Marmoush to Tottenham have not gone away. The Man City attacker is another who has not been getting enough minutes and is thought to be looking to leave. One of the big issues is that Pep Guardiola was not prepared to lose players in the middle of a title charge, which is a shame for Spurs.

7. Leon Goretzka is leaving Bayern in the summer

Spurs are one of many clubs after Leon Goretzka, with the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid chasing the Bayern Munich midfielder. However, it seems more likely he will move in the summer, when he’ll be a free agent.

6. Andy Robertson almost joined Tottenham

One of the biggest surprises of the transfer window was Tottenham being linked to Andy Robertson. It’s thought a £5m move could have happened, before Liverpool pulled the plug on the Robertson deal. The thing is, Robertson was happy to stay at Liverpool despite being interested in the Spurs switch, but we may see the Scotsman drop into North London in the summer for free.

5. Maghnes Akliouche remains a Tottenham target

It’s said it would cost £50m to sign Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco. That’s a hefty fee for the 23-year-old, but he is a player with lots of potential who would have solved a lot of issues for Spurs. He’s versatile enough to play on the wings or in the number 10 role, and may well be one of the big regrets for the Lilywhites in this window.

4. Spurs missed out on Jean-Philippe Mateta

Another slightly surprising rumour for Tottenham in January was the £35m links with Jean-Philippe Mateta. Spurs were facing competition from Nottingham Forest for the Palace forward, and in many ways he would have been an ideal signing to boost the Lilywhites’ firepower.

3. Yan Diomande is going to be a big ticket this summer

Now we really get into the big names, with Yan Diomande very much on Tottenham’s radar. The problem is, Diomande is wanted by six other elite clubs, including Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. It’s thought Leipzig want £87m for the winger, which feels far too expensive for Tottenham’s tastes.

2. Aurelien Tchouameni could be beyond Tottenham

The rumours linking Tottenham with Aurelien Tchouameni were short-lived, but very exciting. It was said Spurs had offered £85m for Tchouameni, apparently, but Liverpool were also interested. Nothing happened, but given the Frenchman gets a lot less action at Madrid, there’s a chance he could still move on in the summer.

1. Adam Wharton is Tottenham’s dream summer signing

Of all the players Spurs have been linked with in the last couple of years, there may be no more perfect and talented signing than Adam Wharton. So many clubs are interested in the Crystal Palace midfielder, but the Eagles don’t want to sell, which is understandable. Wharton is Tottenham’s top target, but they’ll have to wait until the summer. In fairness, Palace are aware they will have to let Wharton go eventually, so maybe there’s still a chance of that deal happening.
