Amazon eliminating 700-plus Bay Area jobs

Amazon revealed plans to slash 769 jobs in the Bay Area, reductions that will erase positions for workers in the South Bay and San Francisco, the company reported in official filings with the state’s labor agency.

Seattle-based Amazon provided its decision for the layoffs, which will take place on April 28, in WARN notices sent to the state Employment Development Department.

Cuts in the Bay Area, according to information posted by the state EDD, include a loss of 272 jobs in Sunnyvale, 233 in Santa Clara, 89 in East Palo Alto, 72 in Mountain View, and 103 in San Francisco.

The company stated the staffing reductions would be permanent. None of the employees who are losing their jobs have the right to displace other workers, even those with less seniority.

Amazon said it’s possible some of the affected workers could land jobs elsewhere with the company.

“Affected employees who accept internal transfer opportunities at Amazon prior to their separation date will not be separated as a result of this action,” Amazon stated in its WARN letter.

Amazon’s plans to slash several hundred jobs is fresh evidence that hiring has sputtered badly within the once-robust technology sector. The layoffs arrive on the heels of what was a weak job market in 2025 for the Bay Area, which lost 20,000 jobs last year.

In recent days, Pinterest revealed it decided to eliminate 118 jobs, while Google said it was cutting 77 in Sunnyvale.

On Jan. 20, Western Digital Technologies cut 87 jobs at its headquarters complex in South San Jose.

Facebook owner Meta Platforms disclosed it decided to cut 219 positions in Burlingame.
