Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Son of Former Libyan Leader, Killed in Libya Clashes
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader, was reportedly killed in western Libya during clashes, marking end to turbulent political life.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was killed Tuesday during clashes involving armed groups near his residence in Zintan, western Libya.
Reuters, citing sources close to his family and his lawyer, reported that the 53-year-old died during fighting that erupted around the area.
Once viewed as his father’s likely successor, Saif al-Islam had projected himself as a reformist figure promising political change and improved relations with Western countries.
However, during Libya’s 2011 uprising, he sided with his father’s regime and became closely associated with violent crackdowns against protesters challenging the government’s rule.
After Muammar Gaddafi’s fall and death, Saif al-Islam was captured while attempting to flee Libya, later facing trial and international arrest warrants related to war crimes accusations.
Following his release under an amnesty arrangement in 2017, he reportedly lived quietly in Zintan for years, largely staying out of public life due to ongoing security threats.
His reported death comes as Libya remains politically divided and unstable, with armed groups still competing for influence more than a decade after the country’s revolution.
