MSF Warns of Critical Maternal and Newborn Health Crisis in Khost province
Doctors Without Borders warns mothers and newborns in Afghanistan’s Khost province face serious health risks due to limited access to specialized medical services.
Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF, reported that mothers and newborn babies in Khost province are facing severe shortages of essential healthcare services and facilities.
The organization said its medical teams supported 21,805 deliveries in healthcare facilities across Khost during 2025, reflecting growing demand for maternal healthcare services.
During the same period, 1,834 newborn babies with critical health conditions required treatment in neonatal intensive care units due to life-threatening complications after birth.
MSF stressed that shortages of equipped medical centers, limited specialist services, and difficult access to hospitals remain major obstacles for families in remote Afghan communities.
Afghanistan continues to record high maternal and newborn mortality rates, with humanitarian organizations warning that economic hardship and weak healthcare infrastructure worsen medical risks nationwide.
Despite operational challenges, MSF says it remains committed to providing lifesaving medical assistance in vulnerable Afghanistan regions while urging increased support for maternal healthcare services.
