Odisha has requested the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) to re-assess its DNA-based elephant count, which reported 912 elephants. This figure significantly differs from the state's own census, which recorded 2,103 pachyderms using the direct sighting method. The state disputes the WII's methodology, citing its cost-effectiveness and accuracy for easily visible mega herbivores.
