Missing UC Berkeley student’s body found in Lake Anza in Tilden Park
BERKELEY — A body found in Lake Anza Saturday was that of missing UC Berkeley graduate student Saketh Sreenivasaiah, officials have confirmed.
The death of the 22-year-old man was confirmed by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office and the San Francisco office of the Consulate General of India.
In a social media posting, the consulate office said, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time.
“The Consulate stands ready to provide all necessary assistance to the family, including coordination with local authorities and arrangements for the repatriation of mortal remains to India at the earliest. Our consular officers are in direct contact with the family and will support them with all required formalities and services.”
Sreenivasaiah had been reported missing last Tuesday and was considered at risk because he was reportedly upset about a relationship, authorities said.
Authorities, including Berkeley and East Bay Regional Park District police had focused on Lake Anza inside Tilden Regional Park after some of his personal items were found in the area.
Divers with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office located the body just after 2 p.m. Saturday. It was taken to the Contra Costa County coroner’s office for an autopsy and a manner of death determination.
Sreenivasaiah had been pursuing a Master’s Degree in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at UC Berkeley.
