A Box Office Smash Hit

The dramatic film made almost $10 million on its opening weekend, a box office success. De Niro got a great payday, between $8 and $10 million.

Casino’ Streams on Netflix Starting in March

Casino follows Robert De Niro’s character Sam “Ace” Rothstein on an odyssey of drugs and money set in 1973. The film also stars Sharon Stone, who plays Ginger McKenna, his long-suffering, money-hungry wife who has a taste for the finer things in life and finds solace in drugs when her home life starts to fall apart. She learns that money can't buy happiness, but fairly late.

Ace tries to run a casino in Las Vegas, finds balance dealing with the influx of mafia influence, all while attempting some semblance of normalcy at home with his wife, who has her own demons.

Classic Lines from Casino

“Ace to the Don, “Listen to me very carefully. There are three ways of doing things around here: the right way, the wrong way, and the way that I do it. You understand?”

Ace narrating about trusting people in his life, “When you love someone, you've gotta trust them. There's no other way. You've got to give them the key to everything that's yours. Otherwise, what's the point? And for a while, I believed, that's the kind of love I had.

Ace, before his luck runs out, “Back home, they would have put me in jail for what I'm doing. Here, they're giving me awards.”

Real Mob Associations

The character Sam “Ace” Rothstein is based on Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, who was retired from a life of living outside of the law. He met De Niro and offered advice on the film, but was disappointed with some of the plot points her thought made him look foolish.
