Stunning stat shows Tottenham are the true kings of the Europa League in Britain
An impressive stat shows that Tottenham Hotspur have a bigger European legacy than most clubs in the Premier League.
Igor Tudor has refused to be distracted by the Champions League draw, with the Croat stating that the Lilywhites have ’11 finals’ in the Premier League.
One can understand the 47-year-old’s sentiment, given that Tottenham are currently in a fight to avoid relegation for the first time in nearly half a century.
However, it is impossible for fans not to be excited after Spurs were drawn against Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 stage of the Champions League.
Tottenham have the best record of any English club in the Europa League
Spurs do not have a rich history in the Champions League, although they have been semi-regular in the competition for the last decade and a half, and were one step away from winning it in 2019.
However, as far as the Europa League is concerned, the Lilywhites have a bigger legacy than any other Premier League club.
Tottenham won the competition for the third time last season, and Transferkmarkt have now revealed that the club have played 159 matches in the competition, comfortably higher than any other British side.
Spurs have won 57 per cent of their matches in the Europa League (or the UEFA Cup as it used to be called), which is only bettered slightly by Arsenal and Newcastle, who have played far fewer games than Tottenham.
Can Spurs perform a miracle in the Champions League this season?
This season has not been too different from the last campaign for Tottenham, who have done exceedingly well in Europe while their domestic form continues to go from bad to worse.
Some Spurs supporters may be dreaming that this campaign could have a fairytale ending just like the last one.
However, the Champions League is a much more difficult competition to win, and unlike last campaign, the club cannot put all their eggs in the European basket, with relegation now a very real possibility.
