1975 Classic Ranked 'Funniest Movie of All Time'

0

Monty Python and the Holy Grail has been voted the "funniest movie of all time" according to a ranking compiled by TheTopTens.

The 1975 classic stars icons John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, and Graham Chapman in a series of incredibly dry comedy sketches that loosely retell the story of King Arthur and the Knights of Camelot.

'Monty Python' Is A Staple of British Comedy

Monty Python is totally unlike any other comedy film of its time; it's a witty, sarcastic parody of low-budget fantasy stories, using the story of King Arthur to poke fun at the genre as a whole. The film has been praised for its ability to not take itself too seriously, with the story falling apart and breaking the fourth wall constantly yet being all the funnier for it.

The Monty Python group had already made a name for themselves as comedians in the United Kingdom prior to this film, with each individual member having a career of their own and coming together to work on sketch comedy together. The Holy Grail, however, gave the group an opportunity to break into an international market.

The film was the highest-grossing British movie screened in the United States in 1975, which was a massive accomplishment for such firmly domestic stars.

Since its release, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has consistently appeared on critics' lists of the best comedy films ever made, including a second-place ranking on ABC's Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time television special. It was beaten by Leslie Nielsen's Airplane!, which interestingly came second on TheTopTens' ranking.

"Pure comic genius went into this movie," one commenter wrote about Monty Python. "I truly believe that this movie is the most enjoyable and funniest movie ever put to film and tape."

Another writes: "This movie is so funny. And if you looked at the budget you'd laugh harder than you did when they shot the cows from the catapults."

Further down the ranking are Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Bergundy, Dumb & Dumber, and Borat. Another 1970s parody film, Blazing Saddles, also made the list in eighth place.
