Sports Briefs: Weinberg drives Archie Williams past hard-hitting Branson
The steady hitting of Archie Williams High was more than a match for the power of the Branson School in Tuesday’s 6-2 MCAL baseball victory. Kingston Weinberg was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and run. Weinberg’s double was the Peregrine Falcons’ only extra-base hit of the game. Senior August Block had a hit, two RBIs and a run for Archie Williams (1-2). Falcons senior Wyatt Koenig went six innings for the win, with five strikeouts and four hits. Paulie Ganaden and Colby Buxton both hit solo homers for the Bulls (1-1).
- San Marin shut out Marin Catholic, 2-0, in a fierce pitchers duel Tuesday as each team managed only two hits. Mustangs senior Jaden Brown went 6 1/3 innings, with six strikeouts and five walks. Wildcats senior Cooper Mitchell rang up 10 strikeouts across four innings, with four walks, a hit and an earned run. Senior Matthew Baldino hit a solo homer for the Mustangs (1-1), while Will Brady drove in Connor Simpson. Seniors Kyle Conroy and Luke Martin each singled for the Wildcats (2-1).
- Redwood High’s Ethan Ferry had a stellar defensive game with eight putouts and the Giants got solid pitching during a five-hit shutout in Tuesday’s 4-0 MCAL victory in Larkspur. sophomore Landon Brunk had six strikeouts and gave up three hits through five innings for the Giants (1-0-1). At the plate, Brunk was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Junior Maxim Wells was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. The Bulldogs (2-3) got a pair of hits from junior Noah Shapiro, and singles from seniors Floyd Greene and Sebi Chick and junior Mikey Gianinno.
- Tam High (2-1) rattled off eight hits in Tuesday’s 5-1 victory at Terra Linda.
College baseball
College of Marin homered twice as the Mariners (9-7) rolled past Laney, 12-1, Tuesday in Kentfield. Patrick Kozielec hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Adrian Ruiz added a two-run shot of his own in the fifth inning. Gaetano Polizzotti got the win as he added a two-run double in the seventh. Micah Marquez racked up eight strikeouts and held the Eagles to two hits through six innings.
Boys golf
Drew Kafalatas shot a 3-under 33 at Peacock Gap on Tuesday to lead Branson (3-0) to a 186-217 victory over Tam High. Finn Spence carded a 41 to lead the Red-tailed Hawks.
Boys tennis
Marin Catholic’s Charlie Miller surged to a 7-5, 6-1 victory over San Rafael’s James Ward as the Wildcats rolled to a 6-1 victory. The Wildcats won all six matches on the courts, but defaulted a doubles match. David Shepard, Toby Tobin and Burke Hadd won singles matches for Marin Catholic.
- Tam High posted a 6-1 victory over San Marin, highlighted by a thrilling win at No. 2 singles by Ben McGinness, who held tough 6-2, 6-4 against the Mustangs’ Alex Christfort. Oliver Pool took the No. 1 singles match won 6-1, 6-1 for the Mustangs’ only win.
- Redwood High swept doubles and got a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles by Casra Afsharpour to secure a 4-3 win against Novato on Tuesday. The Hornets’ Maddox Core rallied for a 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 1-0 win over the Giants’ Bryce Phillips, and Alex Kirsten and Miles Harris also won singles matches for Novato.
Boys volleyball
San Rafael sophomore Rowen Saunders had 13 kills as the Bulldogs posted a 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 win over Novato on Tuesday. Mason Stein added 12 kills and nine digs. Deo Datnow had 24 digs for the Bulldogs, who got 28 assists for Jason Chang.
