Casson Back in Flight After Injury Setback
The Big Barrel Hawks have confirmed the return of Balin Casson for the 2026 Sal’s National Basketball League season. The young forward rejoins the squad after missing the 2025 campaign while recovering from an ACL injury.
Casson suffered the injury during the 2024 season, forcing him to sit out the entire 2025 Sal’s NBL season. After a year of hard work focused on rehabilitation and rebuilding his strength and confidence, the Hawke’s Bay product is now back on court and ready to contribute to a Hawks roster focused squarely on winning in 2026.
Standing at around 191cm, Casson is a versatile wing who brings energy, effort and a willingness to compete, traits the Hawks value as they continue assembling a team capable of competing at the top end of the league.
For Casson, the opportunity to return to the Hawks environment after a frustrating year away from the game is something he is grateful for. “Missing last season was tough, but it gave me time to really focus on my rehab and getting stronger,” Casson said. “Being back with the Hawks and back on the court means a lot. I’m excited to get back into the environment and do whatever I can to help the team win games.”
Big Barrel Hawks General Manager Jarrod Kenny said Casson’s return is another positive step as the club continues building depth and competitiveness within the roster. “Balin has shown a lot of resilience over the past year,” Kenny said. “Coming back from an ACL injury takes real discipline and commitment, and he’s put in the work to get himself back into a position where he can contribute again.”
The return of Casson also continues the Hawks’ focus on developing Hawke’s Bay talent, something the club sees as an important part of building a sustainable winning culture.
Now back to full health and entering the season with renewed motivation, Casson will look to take the next step in his young career while helping the Hawks pursue their goal of winning a championship.
Casson now joins Alonzo Burton, Kobe Kara, Isaac Allan, Keanu Rasmussen and Clifton Bush III as other roster players signed to date for the 2026 season.
