"Turning point": Alan Shearer picks two Arsenal stars in Premier League Team of the Week
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has picked two Arsenal stars in his Premier League Team of the Week.
The Gunners secured a second-straight league win after a 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
The Black Cats gave a good account of themselves in the opening half and it required a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock.
Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring with a powerful low shot from outside the box, which found the net with the help of the woodwork.
Viktor Gyokeres doubled the club’s advantage shortly after coming off the bench before bagging his brace, late into stoppage time.
Unsurprisingly, Shearer picked Zubimendi and Gyokeres in his Team of the Week and said that the former’s goal was a ‘massive turning point‘.
Arsenal temporarily moved nine points clear of second-placed Manchester City in the standings, but the gap was reduced on Sunday evening.
Liverpool took the lead through a stunning Dominik Szoboszlai freekick, but the Cityzens came from behind to beat the holders 2-1 at Anfield.
Despite the result, the Gunners still have a handy six-point advantage at the top of the table and need to keep on winning to boost their title bid.
Pep Guardiola’s side play first in midweek with a home game against Fulham on Wednesday. They could reduce the gap to the top to three points.
Arsenal will have their credentials tested at Brentford on Thursday. They have won in their last four trips, but the west London side are in superb form too.
It won’t be an easy challenge at the Brentford Community Stadium. Gyokeres looks poised to start and needs to continue his sublime scoring form this year.
After Brentford, Arsenal have an FA Cup fourth round tie against Wigan Athletic at home at the weekend.
This will be followed by a league fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road on 18th February. That game has been preponed due to the Carabao Cup final on March 22.
Manchester City’s match against Crystal Palace also needs to be rescheduled soon. It won’t be next week due to the Eagles’ involvement in the Conference League knockout playoff.
Arsenal could be nine points clear of the Cityzens after facing Wolves at the Molineux Stadium with two more wins. The Gunners only need to focus themselves to get over the line in the title race.
